Overview

GCSE Geography at Oxford Online School is taught through live, teacher-led lessons, wherever your child is in the world. Classes average 15 students, so every child is drawn into discussion, feels included and has the confidence to take part. Lessons follow a structured timetable across the two-year course, with regular assessments and planned mock exams building exam readiness well before the real thing.

What Students Study

Why study Geography?

Geography is one of the most versatile International GCSE choices. It bridges the sciences and the humanities, pairing naturally with subjects like Biology, Economics and History while building skills in data handling, analysis and clear written argument. It leads to A Level Geography and supports future study and careers in areas such as environmental management, urban planning, international development, journalism and data analysis.

Course content

Students follow the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE (9-1) Geography specification, which balances physical and human geography and builds in geographical fieldwork skills throughout. Physical geography topics:

  • River environments - how rivers shape the land, flooding and river management
  • Coastal environments - coastal processes, landforms and managing coastlines under pressure
  • Hazardous environments - living with earthquakes, volcanoes and tropical storms, from preparation to response

Human geography topics

  • Economic activity and energy - how economies change and the challenge of meeting energy demand
  • Rural environments - farming, rural change and managing rural landscapes
  • Urban environments - urbanisation and life in rapidly growing cities

Global themes

  • Fragile environments and climate change
  • Globalisation and migration
  • Development and human welfare

Course Details

Examinations and assessments

The course is assessed entirely by examination through Pearson Edexcel, with no coursework. Students sit two written papers at the end of the course, and fieldwork skills are assessed within the exams themselves. Throughout the two years, regular assessments and mock exams give students plenty of practice under exam conditions.

When exam season arrives, students sit their papers either remotely under formal remote invigilation or at an approved exam centre close to home. We arrange whichever option best suits each student's location and Pearson Edexcel's requirements for the subject.

  • Paper 1 - Physical Geography: 1 hour 10 minutes, worth 40% of the qualification
  • Paper 2 - Human Geography: 1 hour 45 minutes, worth 60% of the qualification
  • Coursework: none

Qualification

Students who complete the course are awarded the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE (9-1) in Geography, a recognised qualification that supports progression to Level 3 study, including A Level Geography.

Entry requirements

The course has no formal entry requirements, and no prior study of geography is assumed. All teaching and assessment is carried out in English.

Study full time or part time

Most students at Oxford Online School study six International GCSE subjects as standard. Geography can be taken as part of the full programme, or as an individual subject alongside homeschooling or another education arrangement.
