Key Stage 4

๐Ÿ“• English Language

For school aged learners, ages 14-16

Overview

Every English Language lesson at Oxford Online School is live and led by a subject specialist, following a structured timetable through Years 10 and 11. With an average of 15 students in a class, each learner is invited into every discussion and supported to find their voice. Progress is checked through regular assessments, and planned mock exams mean the real papers hold no surprises.

What Students Study

Why study English Language?

Strong command of English underpins success in every other subject and almost every career. This course sharpens how students read, question and respond to real texts, from journalism and speeches to fiction, while teaching them to write with purpose for different audiences. It opens the way to International AS and A Level English and essay-based study of all kinds, and rewards anyone heading for law, journalism, marketing, publishing or public life.

Course content

Students follow the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE (9-1) English Language A specification, working with the Pearson anthology alongside unseen texts. The course develops four connected strands:

  • Non-fiction reading - analysing anthology texts and unseen extracts, from reportage to autobiography
  • Transactional writing - articles, letters, speeches and reviews written for real purposes and audiences
  • Poetry and prose - close reading of literary texts from the anthology
  • Imaginative writing - crafting original creative pieces with control of tone, structure and effect

Examinations and assessments

Assessment is through Pearson Edexcel, with a choice of two routes. Most of the grade rests on Paper 1, and students then either sit a second exam or submit internally assessed coursework. An optional Spoken Language Endorsement, reported separately on the certificate, is also available.

Final exams are taken either under formal remote invigilation or at an approved exam centre in the student's own area - we organise the route that fits where they live and Pearson Edexcel's rules for the subject.

  • Paper 1 - Non-fiction Texts and Transactional Writing: 2 hours 15 minutes, worth 60% of the qualification
  • Route 1, Paper 2 - Poetry and Prose Texts and Imaginative Writing: 1 hour 30 minutes, worth 40%
  • Route 2, Component 3 - coursework: two written assignments, internally assessed and worth 40%

Qualification

The course leads to the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE (9-1) in English Language A, a globally recognised qualification and the natural springboard to Level 3 English study.

Entry requirements

The course carries no formal entry requirements, and no previous qualification is needed to start. The course is taught in English and assessed in English throughout.
