Key Stage 5

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ Spanish

Develop fluency, cultural understanding and linguistic precision through an A Level Spanish course with live lessons, small classes and expert language teachers.

Overview

A Level Spanish develops advanced linguistic competence across speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students engage with authentic texts, film and literature while exploring the cultural, social and historical contexts of the Spanish-speaking world, building the language skills and intercultural awareness valued by universities and employers worldwide.

What Students Study

Language Skills and Communication

Students develop precision and fluency across all four language skills. Structured practice in grammar, vocabulary and register prepares students for examination and real-world communication.

  • Advanced grammar: subjunctive, compound tenses and conditional structures
  • Extended writing: essays, articles and formal correspondence
  • Listening and reading comprehension at advanced level

Society and Culture in the Spanish-speaking World

Students explore contemporary social and cultural themes from Spain and Latin America. Discussion and analysis of these themes develops both language skills and critical thinking.

  • Multicultural society, identity and immigration
  • Youth culture, technology and changing values
  • Equality, human rights and social justice

Politics and the Environment

Students examine political systems, historical events and environmental issues in Spanish-speaking countries. This unit builds the thematic vocabulary needed for extended essays and spoken responses.

  • Political history and current affairs in Spain and Latin America
  • Environmental challenges and sustainability
  • Spanish-speaking countries: regional diversity and global influence

Literature and Film Study

Students analyse a Spanish-language literary text and film in depth. Close reading and critical response develop both language precision and the cultural knowledge required by the specification.

  • Close reading of a Spanish literary text
  • Film analysis: director's craft and thematic interpretation
  • Extended written response and argumentation in Spanish

Independent Research and Speaking

Students develop and present an independent research project on a topic of personal relevance to Spanish-speaking culture. This prepares them for the oral examination and university language study.

  • Research methodology and source evaluation in Spanish
  • Structuring and presenting a spoken argument
  • Responding to questions on personal study topic
