Key Stage 5

๐Ÿงฎ Further Mathematics

Extend mathematical thinking beyond A Level through a rigorous Further Mathematics course with live lessons, small classes and specialist teacher support.

Overview

A Level Further Mathematics is designed for students who wish to develop a deeper and broader mathematical understanding alongside their A Level Mathematics. The course covers advanced pure mathematics, complex numbers, further mechanics and further statistics, providing the preparation needed for mathematics, physics and engineering degrees at top universities.

What Students Study

Advanced Pure Mathematics

Students extend their pure mathematical knowledge into areas not covered in A Level Mathematics, building rigour, abstraction and deeper analytical understanding.

  • Complex numbers and the Argand diagram
  • Matrices, transformations and linear systems
  • Further calculus: implicit differentiation, integration methods

Series, Proof and Differential Equations

Students study advanced topics in series convergence and solve a range of differential equations. Formal mathematical proof is developed to university-entry standard.

  • Maclaurin and Taylor series
  • First and second order differential equations
  • Proof by induction and formal methods

Further Mechanics

Students extend their mechanics knowledge to include more complex motion, variable forces and systems in equilibrium. This unit is essential preparation for physics and engineering degrees.

  • Impulse, momentum and collisions
  • Circular motion and simple harmonic motion
  • Variable forces and work-energy methods

Further Statistics and Probability

Students develop advanced statistical methods, covering distributions, estimation and linear regression. This unit builds the foundations for data science, actuarial studies and econometrics.

  • Probability generating functions and distributions
  • Estimation, confidence intervals and significance testing
  • Bivariate data and linear regression

Vectors, Complex Geometry and Applications

Students apply advanced vector and complex number methods to geometric problems and physical systems, developing the spatial reasoning required at degree level.

  • 3D vector geometry and planes
  • Loci in the complex plane and transformations
  • Applications to physics and engineering contexts

Assessment & Progress

Oxford Online School follows the Pearson Edexcel International A Level (IAL) Further Mathematics specification. This qualification is assessed through written examination only, without coursework. To build exam readiness, students complete:

  • Weekly homework assignments
  • Termly project-based assessments
  • Full mock exams with personalised written feedback

Course Details

Assessment

  • The qualification is assessed entirely through written examinations.
  • Units cover Further Pure Mathematics and applied mathematics modules.
  • No coursework or non-examined assessment component is required.
  • Further Mathematics is typically studied alongside A Level Mathematics.
  • All examinations are sat at an approved Pearson Edexcel International A Level centre.
  • Grades are awarded on a scale from A* to E.

Course Duration

The International A Level course runs over two academic years (Years 12 and 13). Students have continuous access to live online lessons, one-to-one subject support, and learning resources throughout the programme.

Course Outcome

Students who successfully complete all required examinations are awarded the Pearson Edexcel International A Level qualification. This is recognised by universities and higher education institutions worldwide as equivalent to UK A Levels.

Entry Requirements

  • Five or more International GCSE grades at C/4 or above (or equivalent)
  • Grade A*/8 or above at IGCSE level in Mathematics
  • Further Mathematics is usually studied alongside A Level Mathematics
  • A pass in an internal Mathematics assessment completed prior to enrolment
  • Students whose English is not their first language must provide a language certificate showing a minimum B2 level in all components, or sit an internal English assessment
  • Two years of previous school reports are required
